Most doctors will put their patients on a low purine diet when they diagnose the person with gout. Many people refer to this new diet as a low uric acid diet because when they limit the purines the consume they are able to keep the production of uric acid to a lower amount. Which in turn keeps gout flare ups to a minimum.

A low uric acid diet, or low purine diet generally will limit the purines a person should consume. Low purine foods are allowed, but only in moderation. Foods that do not contain purines can be consumed without limitations. However, foods that are high in purines should be consumed rarely, and if at all possible they should be completely eliminated from the persons diet altogether.

Purines induce the production of uric acid in the body. The more purines that are consumed the more uric acid is produced. Some foods have high levels of uric acid within them in addition to the high amount of purines. By maintaining a minute level of purines in the body, your kidneys should be able to filter the uric acid and keep your body from having to deal with the pain of a gout attack.

It is important that you avoid the foods that have the highest amount of uric acid per 100g, as you could be setting yourself up for some serious pain in the future. For the most part, the foods you really should avoid are those that are red meats, shell fish and other high in uric acid and purine.

There are some foods that have been known to be safe to consume on a low uric acid diet, that also seem to work wonders at controlling future attacks of gout. Among them are cherries or cherry juice, nuts, blueberries and garlic. These foods might not assist everyone in their fight against gout, but for many they have.
