Nutrition for Gout – What You Need to Know

Gout pain can be controlled through dietary changes. Nutrition for gout is quite different than your average nutritional needs. This is because you should no longer have foods that are high in purine. Instead, you will need to eat more veggies, fresh fruits and drink more liquids.

Foods that will need to be excluded from your diet are red meats, cauliflower, gravy and sugary foods to name a few. You should begin eating foods that will allow you to consume nearly 50% of your calories from carbs. You can do this by eating more foods that are starchy. It is important for you to reduce the amount of fat you consume daily. To do this, it is best for you to only consume 30% of your total calories a day from fats. This will also help you to lose any excess weight you might be holding on to. By losing the weight you are also assisting in warding off future attacks of gout.

You can eat low purine foods as frequently as you would like to. Some low purine foods are pasta, broths, nuts and low fat cheese. Medium purine foods can be consumed but only in moderation.

If you eat too much and the foods contain a medium amount of purine you are defeating the purpose of eating medium purine foods.Some medium purine foods are mushrooms, whole grains, spinach and peas. High purine foods should be completely excluded from your diet.

The majority of your nutrition for gout will come from the carbs, fruits and veggies.  By modifying your dietary needs you will be able to keep your gout symptoms under control. If you are experiencing gout pain, it is best for you to avoid all foods that have purines in them.
