Generally the best way to successfully treat gout is by preventing it. However, sometimes taking the necessary preventative measures do not work. In these situations you will want to find ways to get quick gout relief to subside the pain as fast as possible. Gout pain is caused by a crystallized deposit around the joints from increased levels of uric acid. Usually the first place to experience gout is the big toe.
For those individuals that have had prior experiences with gout pain, they often attempt to immediately begin treatment before the pain becomes severe. Without treating the gout promptly, an attack can last up to ten days. For some, they seek relief in NSAID.
This is a pain reliever and also helps with the inflammation and flexibility in the joint with the gout. Avoid taking aspirin because it can aggravate the gout symptoms and make it worse. It is best if you stay with anti-inflammatory pain relievers such as ibuprofen.
In some cases when the pain is excruciating you can make an appointment with your doctor. He or she might give you an injection of a medication called corticosteroid. For the most part this will give almost immediate relief to the painful symptoms of gout. It is not a wise choice to have this steroid injection frequently as it can lead to the joints and bones becoming weak.
The next tip generally does not eliminate the pain, it will just make it less severe. Elevating the area that is hurting and relaxing it is a great way to subside the severity of the pain. Relaxing the joint and the surrounding muscles limit’s the tension on the joint and alleviates the pain.
Sometimes applying an icepack to the area can relieve the pain. However if the pain is severe you might feel more uncomfortable applying the pressure of the ice. Allow the ice to sit on the joint for ten minute intervals until the pain is gone or at least bearable.
Drinking fluids such as water and herbal teas to keep yourself hydrated and flush the excess uric acid out of your system. Once the uric acid is neutralized or eliminated you should begin to feel relief from the pain.
You can prepare a salve of powder activated charcoal, flaxseed and hot water. Take the mixture and apply it to the area in pain. Be sure you keep the area covered after you apply the paste. For this recipe you will need to mix ½ c. charcoal(powder activated), 2 tbs. ground flaxseed and add the hot water until it forms a paste. You can reapply the paste every four hours or you can leave it on overnight for continuous quick gout relief.
